Maple providers can't issue urgent referrals. For more information on our wait times, see Specialist referral response times.
What's a specialist referral?
A specialist referral is a medical document that requests you to be seen by a specific medical specialist in the public healthcare system, such as dermatologists, neurologists, urologists, gynecologists and psychiatrists.
Who can get a specialist referral on Maple?
Specialist referrals are available in some provinces for those with Maple memberships and patients who have certain coverage through employer benefits or private insurance plans.
When requesting a visit on Maple, be as specific as possible if you're looking for a specialist referral.
If the practitioner can't help you, they'll let you know before your visit begins. If you paid an individual visit fee, you won't be charged.
All medical care—including referrals, prescriptions and treatment directions—is at the practitioner's discretion. The practitioner is also required to verify your identity before issuing a referral.
How long are specialist referrals valid?
Specialist referrals are typically valid for one year from the date they're issued. However, the specialist clinic decides if you should get a more recent referral to ensure an accurate assessment of your current condition.
